We don't often publish essay length stories in the Spa eNews, but we felt this piece is so reflective of what we do here we can't help but want to share. Take a few deep breaths and a moment for yourself to relax and enjoy!

How often do we steam through every day so intent on completing our task list that we fail to notice the beauty of our surroundings? The value of our friendships? The mental and physical well being of ourselves? Being very task oriented myself, I know I am guilty of usually putting myself last and rarely do I take the time and create an opportunity to focus on myself. I stay so busy in my own mind that there is rarely any sense of peace or that unique state of simply being.

Nothing makes me more aware of my lack of attention than taking an hour or so out for a massage. At first it is just another thing on my ever growing "to do" list. Recently when I finally got around to it and actually found myself slipping under the sheet on the massage table, my mind was still reeling off who I hadn't called, which bills needed attention that day, the fact that I needed to call my mom, get some cash to my son, and confirm the two tentative meetings for later on in the week. Did it stop there? No, of course not! I remembered having the strained conversation with my husband that morning that still needed to be resolved, and that I still needed to check in with my sister about the slow real estate market and try to reassure her that things would indeed turn around.

About the time I was regretting making the appointment at all, my therapist came in and with a soft voice said, "Now take a few deep breaths. This is your time."

I can recall that like I'm still there. I realize it's too late to regret the time spent and close my eyes. The therapist rubs her hands together under my face where it rests in the face cradle and the light scent of lavender signals my brain to slow. As she takes the first long stroke down the length of my back, I exhale relishing in the quiet touch. My mind is still reeling with my unfinished to do list, but the various tasks seem to be coming at a slower pace. The steady rhythmic massage strokes lull me into a state of relaxation and I realize that I'm not aware of the past few minutes. Did I doze off? I'm silently following the movement of her hands and the clarity I now have in my mind allows me to notice the depth of pressure she is using, the repetitive strokes on my shoulders and the quiet in the room. There is a light tinkling from the fountain; funny - I hadn't noticed that when I came in. The background music is pleasant - a combination of light instrumental and nature sounds. Another deep breath and I realize there is a delicious vacant space in my head. The to do list is gone. The family issues are gone. It is a quiet centeredness that allows time and space for me to notice everything around me. The whole entirety of the present moment. I know how very rare that is for me. I believe this is the centeredness people talk about that has always been so elusive for me.

As the massage finishes and I wrap the thick warm robe around me, I feel wonderfully refreshed. Rejuvenated. Appreciative of the time, the moment, and the energized feeling I have. I feel content; almost ready to dive back into the business of life. I know I will be much more productive, effective and less stressed after this short escape. I caution myself not to forget this feeling and mentally add another item to my to do list . . . schedule another massage.

Spa Tips of The Month
Little hints to make your spa experience a lot better.

  • Try something new by listening to the recommendations of spa employees or other guests. There is so much to try in the world of treatments - don't be afraid to explore options.

  • Jewelry should not be worn during services. (Actually, it's a good idea to leave valuables at home.)

  • Cell phones and pagers and other electronic devices don't belong in the spa; ensure the integrity of the spa experience by turning these items off as soon as you walk in. If you want to leave an emergency number with a sitter or a family member, the front desk will gladly alert you to any emergency called in.
